When making a claim that something exists, it's enough to find just one example of it. I think there are enough anecdotes to say that moral licensing definitely exists.

That said, I agree the research on it is low-quality and that it's probably not so widespread that it's something to worry about when you're doing good.

Though, completely apart from any empirical academic studies: aren't there clearly *some* cases of moral licensing? It seems to me there are some uncontroversial examples from everyday experience: for example, if I want to eat less animal products but find it hard, I might say that I'll start with foregoing eggs. In other words: going all-in on eggs prevents me from taking small steps from eating less cheese?
